Enneagram Type 1 (Enneatype 1) – The Perfectionist

Popularized in the 1970s in the mainstream of humanist psychology, the enneagram is a method of personal development and management.

The Enneagram describes nine different ways of approaching the world, and consequently nine very different ways of interacting with it. Ennea means 9 in Greek. Each of the 9 Enneatypes has its strengths, its weaknesses. Each of us privileges certain information and leaves others aside, in an unconscious way, limiting ourselves to one version of reality. This personal development tool allows you to get to know yourself better and to free yourself from certain sometimes limiting automatisms, and thus improve your interpersonal relationships and well-being.

The enneagram fits well with approaches in modern psychology. Like mindfulness, it emphasizes the importance of arousal over the “autopilot” of daily routines. Like cognitive and behavioral approaches, it relies on beliefs and the identification of inappropriate patterns. Its cognitive and emotional structure can be a useful and powerful guide.

Each individual has the nine profiles of the Enneagram within him, but does not develop them all in the same way. What makes each person unique.

What I feel. How i see myself

I can easily see what is wrong and how things could be improved. I am responsible and I like things to be done well, besides I am proud of that. MoreoverI have a great sense of self-criticism, thoroughness, and integrity, so I don’t like lies and unjustified criticism.

I sometimes get caught up in too much detail and respect for the rules, work generally comes before pleasure. I often use the words “must” and “must” because I know the right thing to do. Don’t ask me how I know, I know that’s it, it’s like that, I have this impulse in me that makes me do the right thing. There is a right way to do it and I don’t like people who break the rules.

I like

  • Behave correctly
  • Bring order
  • Respect for the rules
  • Things well done

I don't like

  • Cheaters, those who break the rules
  • Unfair criticism
  • The disorder
  • The vagueness, the uncertainty

How others perceive me

Type 1 is expressed by the evaluation of the world in terms of idealism, morals and ethics. He is very critical of others but even more of himself. He considers himself honest, defender of rules and principles. However with this urge for things done right, 1s tend to believe that there is only one “right” way to do things.

People of this personality type are mainly interested in making things better because they think nothing is ever quite good enough. This makes them perfectionists who desire to reform and improve; idealists who strive to bring order out of the omnipresent chaos.

1s have a keen eye for detail. They are always aware of faults, theirs, those of others and those relating to the situations in which they find themselves. This triggers a need for improvement, which can be beneficial for all concerned, but which can also become a heavy burden both for the 1 itself, and for those it is trying to reform.

1s are often determined and ambitious and are sometimes addicted to work. But whatever their professional commitment, they are definitely active, practical people who do the right thing. They are born organizers, they make lists and always accomplish what’s on the list to the end, the last to leave the office, the first to return, hardworking, reliable, honest and dedicated.

Relationships

The Enneagram Type 1 ego makes him believe that he will only be accepted if he is perfect. The slightest mistake becomes a source of anguish and anger. Anger is not tolerable in his idealist vision. Anger is therefore vigorously repressed, and is only exteriorized in rare moments of an explosive temperament, but most often manifests itself in less obvious substitute behaviors: impatience, frustration, annoyance and judgment. critical. For this reason, they can be difficult to live with. On the positive side, they tend to be loyal, responsible, friends, and knowledgeable partners.

If he manages to manage his rigidity and his critical sense, he is an excellent employee or friend, very conscientious and methodical, who does quality work.

Although particularly sensitive, type 1 can seem deprived of emotions because, as he believes them to be inappropriate, he tries to camouflage them. This does not prevent him from being an irreproachable companion, although demanding

The Enneagram Type 1 Profile

I am straight and hardworking

 Unconditional scheme

“The world is imperfect”

“The world punishes bad behavior”

“Emotions disturb perfection”

Conditional scheme

“If I want to exist, I must not make a mistake”

“If I am not 100% successful, it is a failure”

Consequences

I got into the habit of noticing mistakes and correcting them. Then I easily compare myself with others. I concluded that there was only one right way to do it right. When I notice deviations, and they cannot be corrected, it frustrates me.

Personal rigor and high ideals. The frustration and guilt of everything that seems wrong or not at the top.

Paradoxes :

  • perfection does not exist, exhausting oneself after chimeras.
  • The “right” way is not always the best
  • Emotions are necessary for good decisions but can also be harmful

Responsible, honest, rigorous, disciplined, methodical, sense of improvement

For that: I react (defense mechanism). I have to correct and improve anything that seems wrong. I cannot remain without reaction. So I have to control my anger.

anger. An inner and dull anger

Risk :

to be perceived as too critical, inflexible, obsessive, obstinate, without tender emotion

Patience

  • Understand that correction and righteousness are not part of the natural order of things
  • Gain compassion for yourself
  • Recognize and minimize the critical inner voice
  • Take time to relax, have fun and accept yourself for who you are

Projections and wings

When type 1 is under stress, it projects towards its region of disintegration. He then resembles type 4 by his irrational and melancholy side.

In the phase of security and tranquility, type 1 projects themselves into their integration zone and behave like a blossoming type 7, making themselves more natural, warm, cheerful and jovial.

  • With a pronounced 9 wing: the Idealist.
  • With a pronounced wing 2: the Advocate.

Confusions and similarities with other types

Enneagram Type 1s are often intelligent and independent and can easily believe themselves to be a 5, but unlike 5s, they are essentially a person of action, not a thinker.

1s are often worried and anxious and can sometimes think they are 6, but they are much less associative than 6s and their norms are not reached by seeking consensus with a group.

Finally, the tireless pursuit of perfection can turn destructive and lead them to depression. At these times, a 1 can be mistaken for a 4. But 4s tend to be self-indulgent as 1s sacrifice their own desires. 4s are emotionally expressive, while 1s are emotionally hampered.
